The area started swelling, and the fast-growing mass of blood vessels, known as a hemangioma, eventually caused her eye to swell shut and pushed the eyeball down and outward and started eroding the eye socket bone around the eye. I do not see how “one law for all” is even possible, let alone whether it has ever been practiced.

I’ll need a long summer break just to finish Jerry Fodor and Massimo Piattelli-Palmarini’s dense but explosively exciting What Darwin Got Wrong (Profile). The celebration of the great scientist’s bicentenary last year courteously sidestepped the fact that most cutting-edge biologists now regard natural selection as little more than cosmetic tweaking in the process of evolution.

Jason Rosenhouse has a short, clear post in which which he briefly exams the polling data to see if New Atheists have harmed the cause of science education , an accusation frequently made. He shows that no, there is absolutely no evidence of such a thing; there may be a trend in the other way, in an increase in the number of science educators willing to say that there is no sign of intelligent guidance in evolution, but he’s also rightly cautious to say that there are a lot of variables at play here, so it would be premature to say there is a positive effect

Schools often block access to parts of the internet, which is fine, if only to focus students’ attention a little bit. It is not fine when they discriminate, like Indianapolis public schools, which block on religious views other than the Abrahamic religions . Their rules, though, mention something I did not know.

There’s an excellent summary of why this was a really bad idea here , and apparently Blizzard has an inkling of possible problems — they’re waffling about whether to publish employee names under their new terms .

First homeopathy is decreed bogus and unsupportable by the NHS , and now this: UK doctors are declaring gay conversion therapy damaging and harmful . There is a bit of wishful thinking, but at least this sentiment is optimistic: Hopefully, anyone involved in the so-called treatment of homosexuality will realize that the medical profession considers them dangerous charlatans, and will reconsider their beliefs. I also sincerely hope that any vulnerable gay person who is unhappy about their sexuality takes notice of this motion and realizes that it is the world that needs to change, not them.

It’s impressive that it’s happening in Texas, but I noticed something portentious in its placement: it’s on I-35 , a road familiar to me as the major north-south artery in this region (Minnesota and Texas have a direct connection, you see)

I have one of them huge mega-churches going up about 2 blocks from where I live. It truly is a massive complex – taking up about 6 city blocks (2/3 of that for parking). And I can not help but wonder what a great boon it would be if that type of money and energy could be devoted to useful purposes.
